Lee and Penny Anderson’s journey is one of enduring partnership, heartfelt philanthropy, and a shared love for craftsmanship—whether expressed through wine, classic automobiles, or the quiet elegance of a lakeside retreat. Married for over six decades, the Andersons have built a life rooted in generosity and curiosity, with passions that span continents and cultures.

 A Humanitarian Path to Croatia

Their connection to Croatia began not with tourism, but with compassion. In the early 2000s, Lee and Penny joined humanitarian relief efforts in post-war Bosnia and Croatia, supporting the rebuilding of schools and infrastructure through the St. David’s Relief Foundation. What started as a mission of service quickly became something more—a deep emotional bond with the region’s people, landscapes, and spirit.

Drawn to the rugged beauty of southern Dalmatia and the warmth of its coastal communities, the Andersons began returning regularly. They discovered not only a place of healing, but a place of inspiration—where bold wines, ancient traditions, and Adriatic light converged in unforgettable ways.

The Birth of Korta Katarina

Moved by the region’s potential and soul, Lee and Penny acquired the historic “Rivijera” hotel in Orebić, Croatia, and began a decade-long journey of restoration and vision. In December 2019, they opened Villa Korta Katarina, an intimate, sea-facing retreat designed with elegance, emotional resonance, and a deep respect for place. In 2020, the villa was proudly accepted into Relais & Châteaux, joining a global family of properties celebrated for their character, cuisine, and connection to culture. In 2025, Villa Korta Katarina was further honored with the prestigious MICHELIN Key, recognizing it as one of the world’s most exceptional stays.

Paired with the award-winning Korta Katarina Winery, the villa offers panoramic views, curated wine tastings, and a soulful connection to the Dalmatian coast. Together, they form the heart of the Korta Katarina Collection—a growing portfolio that will soon include Hotel Katarina, a boutique hotel opening in late 2025, offering expanded experiences and a deeper expression of coastal luxury.

For those seeking to explore the Adriatic in ultimate style, the Collection also includes Yacht Katharine, a 201-foot custom-built CRN superyacht available for private charters of seven days or more. With refined interiors, expansive decks, and a dedicated crew, Yacht Katharine offers an unforgettable way to experience Croatia’s islands, harbors, and hidden coves.

A Passion for Classic Cars & Boats

Beyond wine and hospitality, the Andersons share a lifelong appreciation for classic automobiles and wooden boats—symbols of timeless design and mechanical artistry. Their collection includes rare vintage cars lovingly restored and showcased at elite concours events. Their dedication earned them two Best of Show titles at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the world’s most prestigious classic car gathering. Their first win came in 2022 with a 1932 Duesenberg SJ, a masterpiece of American engineering and elegance. In 2025, they claimed the honor again with a 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra Torpedo, affectionately known as the “Tulipwood” Torpedo—a rare and storied vehicle celebrated for its handcrafted wooden coachwork and aviation-inspired design.

Back home in Minnesota, their lake house is a sanctuary of craftsmanship and nostalgia, where antique boats glide across quiet waters and family traditions unfold with grace. It’s a place that mirrors their Croatian retreat—intimate, storied, and deeply personal.

The Andersons’ love for wine is matched by their commitment to philanthropy. As founding supporters of the Naples Winter Wine & Food Festival, they helped shape one of America’s most celebrated charity events, raising millions for children’s health and education. Their involvement reflects a belief that wine is more than a luxury—it’s a bridge between cultures, a catalyst for generosity, and a celebration of life’s finer moments.
